Getting started

My first blog. Always seemed like a fairly egocentric thing to do, but I like the practical aspects of writing once under the illusion that there will be multiple readers. It also spares my family and friends from being inundated by emails from me telling them how each and every minute of the day went.

Here are the statistics. I'm riding an average of 100 miles a day for 35 days of riding, with 4 days off for good behavior - 40 days (don't ask where the other day went) in total. It'll be hard, easy, fun, boring, hot, cold, steep, flat, wet, dry and everything in between. The trip consists of 10 equally strange but committed riders organized by a few masochists at Trek Travel - starting in Santa Barbara on September 12 and ending in Charlestown on October 20.

The training has been intense, sometimes fun, but much more demanding than I had anticipated time wise, and Sara will deserve some form of sainthood once it's all over.

That's the set up. More to follow, starting at the beginning...
